One-to-one tutoring

What do I offer?

Friendly and approachable private tutoring for GCSE students who feel they need a little extra, bespoke, input to their English Literature and English Language studies.

Which examination boards do I cover?

Tutoring for all major English and international English exam boards:

  • AQA

  • Edexcel

  • OCR

  • Eduqas

  • Cambridge iGCSE

  • Edexcel iGCSE

How are lessons delivered?

Lessons can be given either in person, if you live in the Cheltenham area, or online via Microsoft Teams if you live farther afield.

What do I teach and how do I teach it?

Before tutoring begins, students will be asked to complete a diagnostic assessment. This helps identify their current level and highlight areas for improvement.

I will then arrange a preliminary discussion (free of charge) with the parent/caregiver and, where appropriate, the student. During this conversation, we will talk through the results of the assessment, clarify the student’s goals, and decide together where to focus our attention. Support can be provided in English Language, English Literature, or both.

Please note that it will not be possible to cover all of the content for both GCSEs in just one hour per week, so we’ll prioritise according to individual need.

I use a range of approaches to support learning, including:

  • Shared reading and analysis of texts

  • Shared writing of model answers

  • Colourful, engaging PowerPoint presentations

  • Marking criteria and self-assessment tools

  • Detailed feedback (both formative and summative)

  • A focus on metacognition – helping students understand how they learn, not just what to learn. I encourage them to reflect on their thinking processes, identify what works best for them, and develop strategies to become more independent and self-aware learners.

Students will also have access to my YouTube channel, which covers essential skills and knowledge for both English Language and English Literature.

What’s included?

Each student will receive access to their own personal, password-protected online dashboard, where they can:

  • View the link to their next scheduled lesson

  • Access lesson resources, PowerPoints, and marked work

  • Upload homework

  • Watch relevant supporting videos

This dedicated space is designed to help students stay organised and support independent learning between lessons.

How can students get the most out of tutoring?

Tutoring works best when it’s a partnership. The more proactive and engaged a student is, the more progress they’re likely to make — not just in their grades, but in their confidence and independence as a learner.

A proactive student:

  • Takes time to complete homework thoughtfully, not just quickly

  • Proofreads their work carefully before submitting it

  • Asks questions and reflects on feedback

  • Checks back over previous work and resources before tackling new tasks

  • Reads widely beyond the set texts, even if just small pieces at a time

  • Keeps a vocabulary bank of new words or phrases they’ve encountered

  • Tries to apply strategies from our sessions independently

  • Communicates honestly about what they’re finding difficult

Being proactive doesn’t mean being perfect — it just means being willing to try, to think, and to build on what we do in lessons.

How long are lessons and how much do they cost?

Standard sessions are one hour long, though this is negotiable.

Lessons are booked in blocks of 5, costing £225 per block (equivalent to £45 per hour).

At the end of each block, I will send a statement of account/invoice that includes:

  • A record of the dates of the five completed lessons

  • A request for payment for the next block of five lessons

This will be sent automatically unless the parent or caregiver has given notice that they do not wish to continue.

What do I not teach?

I do not offer TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) as this is a distinct specialism requiring separate qualifications.
